When it comes to my hair, I'm always looking for products that will salvage my dry, damaged split ends. I tend to focus so much on the ends of my hair, that I forget that healthy, beautiful hair starts at the roots! I try my best to be gentle on my scalp and give myself a massage every time I shampoo my hair. But since I only wash my hair about two times a week, a lot of the product I use throughout the week does buildup.
Sometimes clarifying shampoos just don't do the trick. I use apple cider vinegar rinses (one every few months, everyone's method is different.) But lately I want a product that A) I don't have to concoct myself and B) Gets in there to scrub off the buildup on my scalp. I don't know if its a placebo effect, but I will only be satisfied when I can physically feel my scalp getting a thorough scrub down.
If you keep up with the hair industry, you've seen that the latest obsession in hair care is scalp scrubs. Brands such as Briogeo and OUAI have the most popular hair scrubs right now, but those come with a hefty price tag. You guys already know I had to find a drugstore alternative, so I went out on the hunt and this is what I found!
L'Oréal Paris EverFresh Sulfate Free Micro-Exfoliating Hair Scrub
I came across this product in Bed Bath & Beyond (around $9). I've been a fan of the L'Oréal EverFresh system for a while now. I've tried their shampoos, conditioners and hair masks before, so I trust this brand. When I saw they had an exfoliating scrub for the scalp, I had to have it.
The product is of a putty/gel-like consistency. The exfoliating beads are apricot seeds that are small enough to really work through the build-up on your scalp but gentle enough to not cause any tiny cuts. This product has a really refreshing scent, which is unlisted but I can describe it as having the same freshness and calming agent of eucalyptus. The putty/gel consistency is supercooling on the scalp.
I like to use this product in two different ways:
1. Drench my entire head with water in the shower. After I squeeze out the excess water, I take the product and apply it directly to my scalp. I part my hair in all directions, making sure there is a thin layer of this scrub all over my scalp. Once it's applied, I will gently rub the product in a massage-like motion. After about a minute of thorough scrubbing, I'll rinse it out and follow up with shampoo and conditioner.
2. I will shampoo my hair first, rinse and ring out all the water. At this point, your hair will be tangled and stiff due to the shampoo. But since its wet, it will be easy to part at the roots. Again, I take thin amounts and apply directly to my scalp. Once it's applied all over, I gently massage it in for 1-2 minutes. Then I rinse it out and follow up with conditioner.
I usually prefer the second method because I think the shampoo will wash away the first layer of buildup, which will allow the scrub to really work on the scalp. A bonus tip is to give special attention to the hair on the back of your head, above the nape of your neck. We focus so much to the top of our head and sides, that we forget to give love to the back (which accumulates more product buildup!)
I've been using the container for months now! For the first two months, I did use this every week because I felt like I had so much buildup. But now I only reach for this once or twice a month. Everyone is different, so definitely use it as much or as little as you need. Since this product is sulfate-free, I never feel like its stripping my hair of its natural oils.
