Glossier Review - Is It Worth The Hype?

For the past few months, I've been using Glossier products on a day to day basis. If you're new to Glossier, where have you been? Jokes aside, this beauty brand has been blowing up on the internet for the past few years and taking social media by storm.

The Glossier beauty brand was born out of Into the Gloss, one of the hottest sites for all things makeup, skincare, and hair related.

My first impression of it was that it's a hyped up, aesthetically appealing beauty/skincare line. I only saw this brand mentioned in sponsored posts and that typically turns me off.

It wasn't until one of my coworkers kept raving about the products that I considered giving it a shot. This was an IRL testimony from the beauty editor and she was not a rep for this company. Considering how amazing her skin and makeup looked every day, I was inclined to place my order ASAP.

Continue reading for my honest review.

I ordered the latest launch at the time, which was the Cloud Paint cream blush in "Dusk". Unfortunately, that shade didn't show up on my skin tone so I returned it at the Glossier Showroom in NYC. While I was there, I fell prey to the cute packaging and overall cool-girl effect of the brand. Over the course of a few months, I grew my Glossier collection and now I can share my fully formed opinions on them.

Milk Jelly Cleanser $18

From what I saw on multiple YouTube tutorials and Instagram videos, this jelly cleanser can take off your makeup and cleanse your skin at the same time. Although I love the jelly consistency of the cleanser, it did nothing for my skin.

It slipped around my face and I wasn't getting the satisfaction of a foaming cleanser, which is what I'm used to.

I like to use this product more like a cleansing balm rather than a cleanser. I use two pumps of the product and apply it directly to my face and massage it into my skin to break up the makeup. It's gentle enough to use on the eyes as well, but not strong enough to remove waterproof liner/mascara.

Then I'll either take a wet wash cloth or makeup wipe and remove the jelly from my face. If I don't have too much makeup on, I just go ahead and rinse the jelly off. Then I follow up with my drugstore face wash.

Would I repurchase? No

Priming Moisturizer $25

I use this after I've toned and moisturized my face with my holy grail aloe vera face cream. I've seen rave reviews about this primer being super moisturizing and great for dry skin. I was expecting this moisturizer to give me a luminous glow, but it does the opposite. My face feels a little tight after using this and leaves a matte finish. I haven't really noticed a change in the wear of my face makeup since using this product, but I like incorporating it into my routine.

Would I repurchase? Maybe

Mint Balm Dotcom $12

I was so excited to use this product because you will never catch me with dry, crusty lips!!! I was known for being a Vaseline addict when I was younger and tried multiple lip balms to keep my pout smooth.

I love anything minty so of course, I wanted this flavor out of all of them. Although I like the cool sensation, I hate the chunky texture. Maybe I got a bad batch? Not sure. I was so disappointed after using this balm because it's mediocre. I don't see how people can rave about this being the best salve out there. I've had better.

Would I repurchase? No

All three of the products mentioned above come in the Phase 1 set, which is $45 ( $10 saving)

Super Glow Vitamin C Serum $28

Since I'm getting older, I am making it a point to incorporate serums and oils into my skincare. I was a total sucker for the packaging of the Glossier serums, and I couldn't choose between all three. I ended up getting Super Glow because at the time, my main concern was how dull and dry my skin appeared during the winter.

This was the most disappointing product in the bunch, and the one I had the most faith in before purchasing. I wasted $28 on 0.5 fl oz of this crap. This "serum" was such a mess to apply because it was literally WATER. It shot out of the dropper and either slipped down my face or onto the floor. It had no effects on my skin whatsoever. Honestly, this was such a waste of money. I finished it within two weeks and I never noticed a difference in my skin.

Would I repurchase? HELL NO

Perfecting Skin Tint in "Dark" $26

Those familiar with my blog and YouTube channel know that I love makeup, but I love natural looking makeup more than anything. The perfecting skin tint is great for everyday wear. It is a bit on the greasy side, therefore I set it aside for the fall/winter months when my skin will need the extra shine.

The only downside of this product is the shade range. There are only five shades to choose from. I'm usually bouncing back from medium tones like beige to tan. The shade that matched my skin tone the most was "dark" which sounds a bit misleading. On the company site, these skin tints are considered adaptable shades, which I can see working out since the formula is super blendable.

Would I repurchase? Yes, but I have a feeling this product will last a long time.

Swatches of the products mentioned above

Clear Lip Gloss $14

Luckily I didn't have to purchase this product because my lovely coworker received extras in a PR package and gave this to me. TBH I only really wanted this because of the hype on Instagram. I'm not even a lip gloss type of girl. I love the packaging sooooo much! I mean, just look at it 😍

This is a standard clear lip gloss just like any other I've ever tried. It is not as sticky and the fragrance is so faint, it's hard to even tell what it smells like. This is great for anyone who loves to rock a glossy pout.

Would I repurchase? Probably not only due to the fact that I don't wear it often so it will last me a very long time.

So- is it worth the hype?

Although I love the minimalistic packaging and overall look of Glossier items, I don't think it is worth the hype. I find that a lot of my drugstore products do a better job for my skin/makeup and are half the price. If you have perfect skin and a themed Instagram, this is a great brand for you! #DoItForTheGram

I love that the brand is 100% cruelty-free and the general idea of putting skin care before makeup. But something the company should work on is using models that don't have FLAWLESS complexions. I know it's not the sexiest marketing strategy, but if they're really about embracing imperfections, they need to be more realistic in their campaigns.

Even though I didn't completely love any of the products I've used so far, I am not turned off by the brand. I still want to try the stretch concealer and their latest launch, the "Wowder" face powder. Once I purchase those items I am considering making a GRWM using all my Glossier items to show their full effects. Who knows, maybe I will change my mind about some of the products above when I use everything in conjunction.

Have you tried any Glossier products? What are your thoughts on them? Are they worth the hype? Leave a comment down below.

*All opinions are my own. I am not sponsored by Glossier to share my thoughts or discuss their brand. But if Glossier is reading this, feel free to holla at ya girl.*
